SCORESBY FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB:

In May of 1924 the Shire Council purchased 6 acres of land to the rear of the ‘Scoresby Hall’ from a Mr. Rowe at 40 Pounds per acre to be used by the community as a Recreation Reserve.

Over the following twelve months the oval was prepared by the Shire and others to be used for Football & Cricket. A small but functional dressing facility was also constructed by volunteers.

A further area was donated by a Mr.Exner (future President) for the construction of Tennis Courts and Pavilion on the Stud Rd. side. (Tennis Club commenced in 1928 with 2 sand courts and a small club room where the playground is located today)).

In 1949 another two acres was purchased from a Mr. Shepheard for 175 Pounds. According to news reports at the time it was to compensate him for ‘cutting his hand in two’ whilst helping at a working bee.

1925 Club is formed as is the Scoresby District Football Association.

Just why the Association was named as such is a bit of a mystery. We have found nothing in local news to explain why.

Perhaps Scoresby’s central position to the clubs that had entered the competition, being on the cnr. of FTG & Stud rds. where a Petrol Station, Garage, General Store and Hall had been recently built.

There were also two Omnibus services, one along FTG rd. from Oakleigh to FTG the other from Dandenong to Scoresby.

In the years following WW1 the area was being developed as ‘Market gardens’ with apples, pears and other stone fruits in abundance. Perhaps there were plenty of jobs for men returning from the war.

A primary School which in 1921 had 225 pupils and a Methodist church were also nearby.

That number of pupils equates to around 50 to 60 families living in the immediate area plus the church attendees back in the day, so we think the numbers to participate in sporting endeavours looked ok.

First game played at and against Emerald on Sat. 09/05/1925. Lost 5.16.46 to 1.6.12.

  • 1931-Early in 1931 a number of meetings were held in relation to the upcoming Football season. It was the general opinion that a five team competition was not viable. Four of the clubs had indicated that they would join either the ‘Ringwood’ or ‘Mountain’ Leagues which ended the ‘Scoresby’ Association. We suspect that the Club and probably others around at the time were finding it impossible to continue due to in the main, the Great Depression. Some severe floods which ruined crops in 1929/30 did not help either.
